Universities are uniquely positioned to lead the cross-societal discovery and implementation of the SDGs locally and globally–and these goals are now taking center stage at IU Indianapolis. In 2022, IU Indianapolis was named #8 in the US and within the Top 10% internationally for delivering on the SDGs by the TIMES Higher Education Impact Rankings.IU Indianapolis is proud to be ranked highest in SDGs #3, #5, #10, #16 and #17, ranking 3rd, 4th, 3rd, 4th, and 4th nationally respectively and within the Top 10% internationally across the board
IU Indianapolis's ranking is strong validation of what students, faculty, staff, and community partners already know to be true: that IU Indianapolis is deeply committed to creating a campus and community where people, nature, and economic opportunity can thrive in tandem. Research, teaching and learning, community engagement, and campus operations at IU Indianapolis target all 17 of the SDGs through a variety of initiatives. These include:
- Engaging with local and global partners to achieve SDG 17 (building and strengthening partnerships) while encouraging global health and wellbeing through The AMPATH Consortium, clean water solutions through the Arts and Humanities Institutes (IAHI) Global Water Systems initiative, and the newly designed Business Sustainability Lab within IU Indianapolis’s Kelley School of Business is working with global businesses to improve their sustainability strategies in operations and production.
- Through student and faculty work, like that on exhibit at the Galleries at the Herron School of Art + Design, which inspires patrons to reflect upon and engage with the issues of peace and human rights, race and racism, and environmental justice, IU Indianapolis is promoting a public understanding and engagement with SDG 10 (inclusion and equality).
Across disciplines, research initiatives, and community engagements, IU Indianapolis is engaging with the problems identified in the SDGs–encouraging a change in mindsets and cultures around sustainability, prosperity, and peace and justice through innovation, collaboration, and a call for all to rise up to meet our global challenges. The world is full of complex problems, and IU Indianapolis stands firm in its dedication to being part of the solution.
